Stevie Wonder received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2014.
President Barack Obama presented Wonder with the United States’ highest civilian honor at a White House ceremony on November 20, 2014. The award recognized Wonder’s extraordinary musical career and his contributions to American culture and humanitarian causes.
The medal joined a long list of major honors. Wonder had already received multiple Grammy Awards, an Academy Award, induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and the Kennedy Center Honors. The Presidential Medal of Freedom is awarded to individuals who make especially meritorious contributions to national interests, world peace, or cultural and other significant public endeavors.
The year can be confused with 2009, when Wonder received the Gershwin Prize for Popular Song from the Library of Congress. Those are separate honors from different institutions.
