Martin Scorsese directed Michael Jackson’s “Bad” music video in 1987. The project was an unusually ambitious 18-minute short film rather than a conventional pop video, with a screenplay by novelist Richard Price and cinematography by Michael Chapman.
The film was shot in Brooklyn over six weeks in November and December 1986, but it premiered on CBS on August 31, 1987, in the television special Michael Jackson: The Magic Returns. That premiere date is why 1987 is the canonical answer, even though some of the production happened the previous year.
Jackson plays Darryl, a teenager returning to his neighborhood after attending private school. The video draws heavily on West Side Story, especially its stylized gang confrontations and dance sequences, and features Wesley Snipes in an early screen role. The subway scenes were filmed at Brooklyn’s Hoyt–Schermerhorn Streets station.
