In what year did Rembrandt’s first wife, Saskia van Uylenburgh, die?

The story behind the answer

Saskia van Uylenburgh died in 1642.

Saskia was Rembrandt’s first wife, and they married in 1634 in the Frisian town of Sint Annaparochie. Their marriage coincided with Rembrandt’s rising success in Amsterdam. Saskia came from a well-connected family and was the cousin of Hendrick van Uylenburgh, the art dealer who helped establish Rembrandt in Amsterdam.

The couple had four children, but only their son Titus survived infancy. Saskia died in Amsterdam in 1642, probably from tuberculosis, shortly after Titus’s birth. She was buried in the Oude Kerk, where Rembrandt himself was later buried in 1669.

Saskia’s death changed Rembrandt’s household and personal life. He later employed Geertgen Dircx and lived with Hendrickje Stoffels, but neither relationship was the same as his marriage to Saskia. Some portraits of women connected with Rembrandt have been traditionally identified as Saskia, though modern attributions and identifications are not always certain.
