Nike launched the Nike+ service with Apple in 2006 for tracking running activity.
Nike+iPod combined a sensor placed in compatible Nike shoes with an iPod receiver. The system recorded information such as distance, pace, and time, then allowed runners to review their workouts. It was an early example of a major sports brand connecting footwear, consumer electronics, and digital data.
The original service depended on specific Nike shoes and Apple iPod hardware. Later versions expanded through the Nike+ Running software ecosystem and smartphone-based tracking, making the original sensor-and-iPod setup less central.
Nike+ is not the same as Nike’s current membership or app features. The 2006 launch refers specifically to the partnership and connected running system introduced with Apple.
