Nike introduced the Nike SB line for skateboarding in 2002.
Nike SB, short for Nike Skateboarding, was created to build a dedicated skateboarding footwear and apparel business. Before the formal SB line, Nike had released shoes that some skateboarders used, but the 2002 launch marked a focused effort to design products specifically for skateboarding.
The line began with models such as the Dunk Low Pro SB, which adapted the Nike Dunk with features intended for skateboard use. These included padded tongues, improved cushioning, and insoles designed to provide greater impact protection. Nike also worked with professional skateboarders and skate shops to develop credibility within the skateboarding community.
Nike SB is distinct from Nike’s general lifestyle Dunk releases. The skateboarding versions may use different materials, padding, insoles, and construction even when their silhouettes look similar. The line later became known for collaborations with skaters, artists, and independent skate shops.
