Mexican painter Frida Kahlo died in 1954. She died at her home, the Blue House, in Coyoacán, Mexico City, on 13 July 1954, shortly before her Frida Kahlo’s health had been fragile for much of her life. Childhood polio and the severe injuries from her 1925 bus accident caused chronic pain and repeated medical treatment. She also underwent several operations and experienced serious complications in her final years.
Kahlo’s death certificate listed a pulmonary embolism, although some later writers have discussed the possibility of an overdose. The precise circumstances have therefore attracted speculation, but 1954 is the established year of her death. Her cremated remains were placed in a pre-Columbian-style urn and remain at the Blue House, which became the Museo Frida Kahlo in 1958.
Kahlo was 47 when she died. Her reputation continued to grow after her death, and she became one of the most internationally recognized figures in twentieth-century Mexican art. Her paintings are especially known for autobiographical imagery, self-portraits, and references to Mexican culture.
