Mary Quant opened her first Bazaar boutique on London’s King’s Road in 1955.
The shop helped make Quant a major figure in the youthful London fashion scene. Bazaar sold clothes, accessories, and playful designs that appealed to younger customers who wanted alternatives to the formal styles associated with older generations. Its location in Chelsea placed it at the center of the emerging Swinging London culture.
Quant is strongly associated with the popularization of the miniskirt and hot pants, although the history of the miniskirt involves several designers and manufacturers. Her boutique’s importance came from combining design, retail presentation, and youth-oriented marketing. Bazaar should not be confused with Harper’s Bazaar, the American fashion magazine; they were unrelated businesses.
