In what year did Instagram introduce the Archive feature?

The story behind the answer

Instagram introduced the Archive feature in 2017.

The feature gave users a reversible alternative to deleting posts. An archived photo or video disappears from the public profile, but remains available to the account owner, who can restore it later without losing its likes or comments.

Instagram introduced Archive during a period when users were increasingly curating their profiles and worrying about how individual posts performed. The tool let people hide an awkward, outdated, or poorly performing post without permanently removing it. That distinction is why Archive is often confused with deletion.

The feature was introduced in June 2017. It is also separate from Instagram’s downloadable data archive, which arrived in 2018 in connection with data-portability requirements under the GDPR. One archive hides profile content; the other refers to a copy of a user’s account data.
