Fox broadcast the series premiere on November 16, 2004. The episode introduced Gregory House, his diagnostic team, and the fictional Princeton-Plainsboro Teaching Hospital. The medical mystery format was paired with a strong character focus on House’s unconventional methods and difficult personality.
The show arrived during a period when television medical dramas were already popular, but it distinguished itself by making diagnosis the central investigative engine. Rather than focusing mainly on emergency procedures or hospital romance, House emphasized rare diseases, differential diagnosis, and the tensions created by House’s behavior.
