In what year did Galileo die?

The story behind the answer

Galileo died in 1642.

He died on 8 January 1642 at Arcetri, near Florence, at the age of 77. His death came after years of declining health, including fever and heart problems. Galileo had been placed under house arrest by the Roman Catholic Church in 1633 after being convicted of violating an order connected with his support for heliocentrism, the view that Earth moves around the Sun.

Despite his restricted life, Galileo continued writing and working. His final major scientific book, Two New Sciences, was published in 1638 and examined the strength of materials and the motion of falling bodies. By then he was nearly blind, partly because of years of observing the Sun without adequate protection.

A frequent mix-up is confusing Galileo’s death year with the publication year of Two New Sciences, 1638. Another is choosing 1643 because Isaac Newton was born in that year. Galileo’s death year is firmly recorded as 1642.
