Frank Sinatra began his regular performances at the Sands Hotel in Las Vegas in 1953. His first performance there took place on October 4, 1953, after Sands manager Jack Entratter invited him to appear.
The engagement helped establish Sinatra as one of Las Vegas’s defining residency entertainers. He typically performed at the Sands several times a year, making the hotel a central venue in his concert career during the 1950s and 1960s. His appearances also helped shape the casino’s association with celebrity entertainment and the Rat Pack era.
Sinatra later acquired a financial stake in the Sands, reportedly buying two percent for $54,000. His connection with the hotel became more complicated because of his relationships with organized-crime figures, and he was reportedly ordered to sell his interest in 1963.
The year is sometimes confused with 1966, when the famous live album “Sinatra at the Sands” was recorded with Count Basie and his orchestra. That album documents a later stage of his Sands career, not its beginning.
