Facebook officially launched its Workplace enterprise platform in October 2016. The service was designed as a work-focused collaboration tool, using familiar Facebook-style features such as news feeds, groups, messaging, and video communication for organizations.
Workplace was first announced in January 2015 under the name Facebook at Work. It launched in beta before receiving its official Workplace branding in 2016. Although it used much of Facebook’s underlying technology, Workplace accounts were separate from personal Facebook accounts.
The platform targeted companies, schools, and nonprofit organizations that wanted an internal communication system. Its launch is sometimes confused with the 2015 announcement or beta release, but the question asks when the platform launched officially, making 2016 the canonical answer. Meta announced in 2024 that Workplace would be phased out, with the service scheduled to shut down in 2026.
