The revamped Groups allowed people to create a group and add friends directly, while also supporting shared discussions, group chat, documents, and email-style communication. Facebook presented the feature as a way to handle different audiences—such as family, coworkers, classmates, and close friends—without treating every post as equally public.
The year can be confusing because Facebook had earlier forms of group-like interaction, including networks, lists, and community spaces. The 2010 milestone refers to the redesigned Groups product that became the recognizable foundation for today’s Facebook Groups. The feature later evolved to include public, private, and secret-style privacy settings, along with administrator tools and group discovery. A separate standalone Groups app was released in 2014, but that was an extension of the existing feature, not its original introduction.
