Discord surpassed 100 million monthly active users in 2020.
The milestone was reported in June 2020, when Discord said 100 million people were using the service each month. This was a measure of monthly active users, not the total number of accounts ever registered, so it should not be confused with Discord’s much larger registered-user figures.
The growth reflected both Discord’s established popularity among gamers and a rapid expansion during the COVID-19 pandemic. People used its persistent text channels, voice rooms, and video features for gaming, study groups, hobby communities, and ordinary socializing while in-person contact was restricted. In the same period, Discord began presenting itself less narrowly as a gaming product and adopted the slogan “Your place to talk.”
The figure is also easy to confuse with later milestones. Discord reported about 140 million monthly users by the end of 2020, and later figures rose further. Thus, 2020 identifies the year it crossed the 100-million threshold, while 2021 and 2022 refer to subsequent growth rather than the original milestone.
