Discord removed its four-digit discriminator system in 2023. In May that year, Discord announced a new username system that replaced names such as User#1234 with unique usernames that no longer used the four-digit suffix.
The discriminator had been part of Discord’s identity system since the service launched in 2015. It allowed multiple people to choose the same username, while the four-digit number distinguished their accounts. As Discord grew, the company said the format created confusion: users had to remember both the exact capitalization and the correct four digits when adding friends.
The change was introduced through a gradual rollout rather than a single instant switch. Users became eligible at different times, with factors including account age, Nitro status, and ownership of partner or verified servers. Discord later began assigning new usernames to people who had not selected one themselves, starting in March 2024. That later step completed migration for many accounts, but the system change itself was announced and rolled out beginning in 2023.
