Discord launched its mobile app in 2015. The service was publicly released in May 2015, giving users a way to carry its voice, video, and text communities onto smartphones as well as computers.

Discord grew out of Hammer & Chisel, the game studio founded by Jason Citron and Stanislav Vishnevskiy. While working on the mobile game Fates Forever, the team became frustrated with existing voice-chat tools used during games such as League of Legends and Final Fantasy XIV. That experience helped inspire Discord’s simpler, low-latency communication platform.

The app initially appealed strongly to gamers, esports communities, and Twitch audiences, but its server-and-channel structure soon attracted study groups, hobby communities, creators, and workplaces. A common mix-up is confusing Discord’s 2015 public launch with later mobile redesigns, such as the major iOS and Android refresh released in 2023. Those redesigns changed the interface and added features; they did not mark the app’s original launch.
