Discord introduced Stage Channels in 2021. The feature launched in March 2021 as Discord’s answer to the growing popularity of live, drop-in audio conversations.
Stage Channels are specialized voice spaces where selected speakers appear “on stage” while other participants listen as audience members. Moderators can invite speakers, move them back to the audience, and manage the discussion, making the format useful for interviews, panels, town halls, and community events.
The feature was often compared with Clubhouse, the social-audio service that became widely discussed in early 2021. Discord initially supported Stage Discovery, which helped users find public Stage Channels, but Discord discontinued that discovery tool later in October 2021.
A common mix-up is confusing Stage Channels with Threads, another Discord feature introduced in 2021. Threads are temporary text discussions, while Stage Channels are moderated live-audio rooms. Discord later expanded its voice, video, streaming, and event tools, but the original Stage Channel launch belongs to 2021.
