Didi Chuxing merged with Kuaidi Dache in 2015.
The merger brought together two of China’s biggest app-based taxi and car-hailing services. Didi Dache was backed by Tencent, while Kuaidi Dache was associated with Alibaba, making the deal significant not only for transportation but also for the rivalry between China’s major technology companies.
The companies announced their tie-up in February 2015 and initially operated under the name Didi Kuaidi. Later that year, the business began the rebranding process that led to the name Didi Chuxing. The merger strengthened its position in China’s rapidly expanding ride-hailing market and helped it compete more effectively with Uber.
A common mix-up is confusing this event with Didi’s later acquisition of Uber’s China operations. That separate transaction was announced in 2016, one year after the Didi–Kuaidi merger.
