Coldplay released their debut album Parachutes in 2000. It was issued in the United Kingdom on 10 July 2000 through Parlophone, followed by a North American release on 7 November through Nettwerk.
The album was recorded between late 1999 and May 2000 in studios including Rockfield, Matrix, Wessex Sound, and Parr Street. Coldplay co-produced most of the record with Ken Nelson, while Chris Allison produced “High Speed.” The resulting album combined alternative rock, indie rock, and soft-rock textures with the intimate sound that became central to the band's early identity.
Parachutes was a major breakthrough: it debuted at No. 1 on the UK Albums Chart and produced four singles, including “Shiver,” “Yellow,” “Trouble,” and the limited European release “Don't Panic.” In the United States, it eventually peaked at No. 51 on the Billboard 200. The album won the Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album in 2002, establishing Coldplay as an international act.
