In what year did Coco Chanel open her couture house at 31 Rue Cambon?

The story behind the answer

Coco Chanel opened her couture house at 31 Rue Cambon in 1918.

The Paris address became closely identified with Chanel’s fashion business and remained its central creative and commercial location. By moving her couture operations there during the late 1910s, Chanel established a base in the heart of Paris’s fashion district.

This date is different from several earlier milestones. Chanel opened a hat shop in Paris in 1910, expanded to Deauville in 1913, and established a couture house in Biarritz during the First World War. The Rue Cambon move marked a later stage in that expansion.

The address is often confused with the date of Chanel’s first Paris shop. The shop’s opening and the establishment of the famous couture headquarters were separate events.
