Claude Monet married Alice Hoschedé in 1892.
Alice Hoschedé had been the wife of Ernest Hoschedé, a department-store owner and art collector who supported Monet. After Ernest’s death in 1891, Alice and her children continued living with Monet and his children at Giverny. Monet and Alice formally married the following year.
The marriage joined two families. Alice had six children from her marriage to Ernest Hoschedé, while Monet had two sons, Jean and Michel, with his first wife, Camille Doncieux. The blended household lived together at Monet’s Giverny home, where Alice helped manage the large domestic establishment.
Monet’s relationship with Alice is sometimes confused with his earlier partnership with Camille Doncieux. Camille died in 1879, and Monet’s marriage to Alice took place thirteen years later, in 1892.
