In what year did China join the World Trade Organization (WTO), greatly expanding its role in global trade?

The story behind the answer

China joined the World Trade Organization (WTO) in 2001, a major milestone in its integration into global trade.

China became the WTO’s 143rd member on 11 December 2001, after a lengthy accession process involving negotiations with existing members. Its entry required China to reduce many tariffs, open selected service sectors and accept international trade rules.

WTO membership supported a rapid expansion of Chinese exports, especially manufactured goods, machinery, electronics and textiles. It also encouraged foreign investment and helped connect Chinese factories with global supply chains.

A common mix-up is confusing China’s WTO accession with the organization’s founding in 1995. The WTO replaced GATT as the main global trade body in 1995, while China joined six years later. China’s accession remains one of the most consequential events in modern international commerce.
