In what year did Charles Dickens die?

The story behind the answer

In what year did Charles Dickens die? 1870. Charles Dickens died on 9 June 1870, aged 58, at Gads Hill Place near Higham in Kent.

The novelist suffered a stroke at home on 8 June after working on The Mystery of Edwin Drood, his final and unfinished novel. He never regained consciousness. Dickens had continued writing and giving public readings despite declining health, completing a final series of performances in early 1870.

Dickens had asked for a quiet, inexpensive burial near Rochester, but public feeling led to his burial in Poets’ Corner at Westminster Abbey. His grave became a national literary landmark, placing him alongside other celebrated British writers.

A common error is to remember 1870 as the year of his final novel rather than his death. The Mystery of Edwin Drood remained incomplete, so its ending has never been definitively supplied by Dickens himself. He was born in 1812, making his lifespan 1812–1870.
