Carhartt celebrated its 125th anniversary in 2014.
Hamilton Carhartt founded the company in Detroit in 1889, so adding 125 years gives 2014. The anniversary marked more than a century of producing rugged workwear, beginning with bib overalls designed for railroad workers and expanding into jackets, pants, coveralls, safety apparel, and other job-focused clothing.
Carhartt's anniversary can be confused with its centennial, which took place in 1989. It is also easy to miscalculate by counting inclusively or by using a later milestone, but the standard anniversary calculation is 1889 plus 125: 2014.
The company was still family-owned during the 125th-anniversary year, continuing the ownership tradition established by its founder. Carhartt's later milestones include its 130th anniversary in 2019 and its ongoing connection to both its Detroit origins and Dearborn headquarters.
