In what year did Bob Marley die?

Bob Marley died in 1981.

Marley died on 11 May 1981 in Miami, Florida, at the age of 36. He had been diagnosed in 1977 with acral lentiginous melanoma, a rare form of skin cancer that began under a toenail. The illness later spread despite treatment, and he became increasingly unwell during the final period of his career.

Marley’s last studio album released during his lifetime was Uprising, issued in 1980. He was traveling back toward Jamaica when his condition deteriorated, and he received emergency medical care in Miami. His body was later returned to Jamaica, where he received a state funeral and was buried at the Bob Marley Mausoleum in Nine Mile.

The year is sometimes confused with 1980 because that was the year of his final album and much of his last touring activity. It was not 1982 or 1983: Marley died the following year, in 1981. His posthumous greatest-hits album Legend appeared in 1984 and became one of reggae’s best-known records.
