Berkshire Hathaway acquired Precision Castparts Corp. in 2016.
Berkshire announced the roughly $37 billion deal in August 2015, but the transaction closed in January 2016. That distinction explains why some summaries mention 2015 while the acquisition year is recorded as 2016.
Precision Castparts, headquartered in Portland, Oregon, makes complex metal components such as investment castings, forged products, fasteners, and aircraft structures. Its products serve aerospace, defense, and industrial gas-turbine customers. The purchase was one of Berkshire's largest acquisitions and added a major industrial manufacturer to its collection of operating businesses.
A common mix-up is confusing Precision Castparts with Berkshire's other manufacturing holdings, including Benjamin Moore, Duracell, and Johns Manville. Precision Castparts remains a wholly owned Berkshire subsidiary.
