Ben & Jerry’s introduced its Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough ice-cream flavor in 1991.
The flavor grew from a customer suggestion posted on a Ben & Jerry’s flavor board in 1984. The company did not immediately produce it because incorporating raw cookie dough into ice cream presented technical and food-safety challenges. After developing a suitable dough recipe and production method, Ben & Jerry’s launched the flavor in 1991.
Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough became one of the company’s best-known products. It combines vanilla ice cream with chocolate-chip cookie-dough pieces and chocolate chips, although the exact formulation has varied by market and over time.
A common mix-up is to confuse the year of the original customer suggestion with the year the commercial flavor first appeared. The suggestion dates to 1984, while the Ben & Jerry’s product launch took place seven years later, in 1991.
