Banksy published the art book Wall and Piece in 2005.
Wall and Piece collected photographs and reproductions of Banksy’s graffiti, stencil paintings and public interventions. It helped bring his street-based work to a much wider international audience, including readers who had never encountered his art on a city wall.
The book is sometimes confused with Banksy’s earlier publications. Banging Your Head Against a Brick Wall appeared in 2001, Existencilism followed in 2002, and Cut It Out was published in 2004. Wall and Piece was a later compilation rather than his first book.
Its title refers to the relationship between walls and art objects. Banksy’s work often questions where art belongs and who controls public visual space. By presenting ephemeral street pieces in a permanent book, the publication also preserved works that could later be painted over, removed or destroyed.
