American Eagle Outfitters became a publicly traded company in 1994.
The company made its initial public offering in 1994 and began trading on the NASDAQ stock exchange. AEO’s corporate timeline records an initial offering of 2.3 million shares under the ticker symbol “AEOS.” The public-market funding helped the retailer expand its store base during a period of rapid growth.
American Eagle had 167 stores when it began trading, according to the company’s historical account. After the IPO, it opened more than 90 additional stores over the following year. This expansion helped establish the retailer as a major mall-based apparel chain during the 1990s.
The company later changed its trading venue and symbol. American Eagle Outfitters began trading on the New York Stock Exchange under “AEO,” which is why modern stock references usually use AEO rather than the original NASDAQ-era symbol. That later exchange change is sometimes mistaken for the date the company first became public; the original public listing was in 1994.
