In what year did Amazon acquire mesh Wi-Fi company Eero?

The story behind the answer

Amazon acquired mesh Wi-Fi company Eero in 2019.

Eero was founded in 2014 by Nick Weaver, Amos Schallich, and Nate Hardison to make home Wi-Fi easier to set up and more reliable. Its system used multiple connected units, called nodes, that worked together to cover a home and reduce dead zones. Rather than relying on one router to reach every room, the network could route devices between nodes as people moved around.

Amazon announced the acquisition in February 2019 and completed the deal later that year. Reports placed the purchase price at about $97 million. Eero continued operating as a recognizable brand and remained focused on home networking hardware and software within Amazon’s broader smart-home strategy.

A common mix-up is the product’s launch date: the first Eero system became available in February 2016, three years before Amazon’s acquisition. Eero is also distinct from Amazon’s smart speakers and Ring security products, although all can form part of a connected smart-home ecosystem. The brand’s name honors Finnish-American architect Eero Saarinen.
