Amazon acquired home security camera company Blink in 2017.
Blink began as Immedia Semiconductor, a Massachusetts company founded in 2009. It later shifted toward consumer home-security products and became known for compact cameras designed for simple installation and long battery life. A 2014 Kickstarter campaign for its indoor security camera raised more than $1 million, helping the company bring the product to a wider audience.
Amazon announced the acquisition in December 2017, adding Blink to its growing portfolio of smart-home and security brands. Blink’s technology was notable for its low-power design, including a custom chip that helped extend battery life. That focus distinguished Blink from many continuously powered security-camera systems.
The year can be confused with 2018 because reports about the deal and its approximately $90 million price appeared more widely in early 2018. However, the acquisition itself dates to 2017. Blink also should not be confused with Ring, another Amazon-owned security company that Amazon acquired separately in 2018.
