In what year did Adolf Hitler become Chancellor of Germany?

The story behind the answer

Adolf Hitler became Chancellor of Germany in 1933.

President Paul von Hindenburg appointed Hitler Chancellor on 30 January 1933 after months of political instability and failed coalition governments. Hitler’s Nazi Party had won the largest share of seats in the July 1932 Reichstag election, though it did not hold a majority. Conservative politicians around Hindenburg believed they could control him within a coalition government.

That calculation failed quickly. After the Reichstag fire in February 1933, the government suspended key civil liberties and intensified arrests of political opponents. The Enabling Act, passed in March 1933, allowed Hitler’s cabinet to make laws without the Reichstag’s approval and helped transform his chancellorship into a dictatorship.

Hitler did not become president in 1933; Hindenburg remained president until his death in August 1934. Hitler then combined the offices of president and chancellor, adopting the title Führer. The year 1935 is associated with the Nuremberg Laws, not his appointment as chancellor.
