South Beach is located in Miami Beach, Florida. It is the southern section of the barrier-island city of Miami Beach, immediately across Biscayne Bay from the mainland city of Miami.

Often shortened to “SoBe,” South Beach is known for its broad Atlantic shoreline, nightlife, hotels, restaurants, and concentration of colorful Art Deco architecture. Ocean Drive, one of its best-known streets, runs along the beachfront and is closely associated with the neighborhood’s identity. The area became especially prominent as Miami Beach developed into a resort destination during the early twentieth century.

A common mistake is to answer “Miami,” because Miami is the larger and more widely recognized neighboring city. Administratively, however, South Beach is a neighborhood of the separate municipality of Miami Beach. Miami Beach includes South Beach along with areas such as Mid-Beach and North Beach. The city is connected to mainland Miami by causeways across Biscayne Bay.
