In what month and year did YouTube begin trials of automatic copyright detection?

The story behind the answer

YouTube began trials of automatic copyright detection in June 2007. The early system was designed to identify uploaded videos that matched copyrighted material supplied by rights holders.

The technology was initially associated with the name “Video Identification” and later became known as Content ID. It created digital fingerprints or reference records for audio and video, then compared new uploads against those records. When a match was found, a rights holder could decide whether to block the video, track its viewing, or monetize it with advertising.

The trials came during intense pressure from media companies and amid copyright lawsuits, including Viacom’s claims against YouTube. The system was not a perfect judge of infringement: detecting a match is different from deciding whether a use is legally permitted, such as under fair use. Content ID consequently became a rights-management system rather than a simple automatic takedown machine.
