In what month and year did the Battle of Gettysburg take place?

The story behind the answer

The Battle of Gettysburg took place in July 1863, from July 1 through July 3. It was fought in and around Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, during the Civil War’s Gettysburg Campaign.

Confederate General Robert E. Lee had led the Army of Northern Virginia north through the Shenandoah Valley in a second attempt to invade the Union states. The armies unexpectedly converged near Gettysburg on July 1, and the confrontation grew into the largest battle ever fought in North America at that time.

The July battle ended in a major Union victory under Major General George G. Meade. Lee’s army withdrew toward Virginia beginning on July 4. The event is often remembered alongside the Gettysburg Address, but Lincoln delivered that speech months later, on November 19, 1863, at the dedication of the Soldiers’ National Cemetery.
