Telegram added group voice chats in December 2020.

The feature arrived as “Voice Chats Done Right,” Telegram’s 12th update of 2020, released on December 23. Unlike a conventional phone-style group call, a voice chat was designed as a persistent audio room inside a group: members could join or leave while the group’s normal text and media conversation continued.

This timing is often confused with Telegram’s other calling milestones. One-to-one voice calls had been available since 2017, video calls arrived in August 2020, and group video chats followed in June 2021. Thus, June 2021 belongs to group video, not the original group voice-chat launch.

Telegram expanded the idea in March 2021 with Voice Chats 2.0, adding channel voice chats, unlimited listeners, recording, titles, hand-raising, and speaker or listener invite links. The feature later evolved into live streams and other audio tools, but its first group appearance remains December 2020.
