Bram Stoker's Dracula was originally published in English.
The novel appeared in London in May 1897, written by the Irish author while he was working as manager of Henry Irving's Lyceum Theatre. Its original British edition was issued for an English-speaking readership by Archibald Constable and Company. The text's settings in Transylvania and England, along with its use of Romanian and other foreign names, do not change the language of publication.
Readers sometimes confuse the novel's English origin with its international subject matter. Dracula borrows names, folklore, geography, and historical associations from Central and Eastern Europe, but Stoker wrote the book in English. Translations followed in many languages, and the story later became a worldwide cultural phenomenon through stage, film, and television adaptations. The first American edition was published later, in 1899, by Doubleday & McClure, and it contained some textual changes; that edition should not be mistaken for the original publication.
