In what key is Beethoven's Symphony No. 5?
Answer
C minor
Answer
C minor
Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5 is in C minor.
Composed between 1804 and 1808, the symphony is officially titled Symphony No. 5 in C minor, Op. 67. Its opening four-note motif—often described as “fate knocking at the door”—immediately establishes the work’s tense and compressed character. Beethoven develops this tiny idea across the entire symphony, giving the music unusual unity and momentum.
The work premiered in Vienna on December 22, 1808, during a famously long concert that also included the premieres of Beethoven’s Sixth Symphony and several other pieces. The Fifth eventually became one of the most frequently performed and recognizable symphonies in the Western canon.
The symphony has four movements. The first and third are centered on C minor, while the lyrical second movement is in A-flat major. The finale makes a striking transformation into C major, using expanded orchestral forces that include piccolo, contrabassoon, and trombones. That shift from minor to major is a major reason the symphony is often heard as a journey from struggle toward triumph.
