Usually written Mont-Saint-Michel in English, the site is a tidal island and commune connected to the mainland by a causeway. Its dramatic medieval abbey rises above a compact settlement of stone houses, defensive walls, narrow streets, and steep stairways. The island’s appearance changes with the tides, although modern engineering and the replacement of the old causeway have helped restore its maritime character.

A sanctuary dedicated to the archangel Michael was established there in the eighth century, traditionally in 708 after a vision experienced by Aubert, bishop of Avranches. Construction of the Romanesque abbey began in the 11th century, and later additions created the Gothic buildings often called the “Marvel.” During the Hundred Years’ War, the fortified site resisted English attacks and became a symbol of French resistance.

Mont-Saint-Michel and its bay were designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979. It is often confused with Saint-Michel d’Aiguilhe or other places named for Saint Michael, but the famous tidal island is specifically in Normandy, France.
