The Serengeti is a vast ecosystem in northern Tanzania, best known for its open grasslands, acacia-dotted savannas, rocky kopjes, and extraordinary wildlife. Much of the Tanzanian portion is protected within Serengeti National Park, established in 1940 and covering roughly 15,000 square kilometres.

The name Serengeti is commonly linked to a Maasai expression meaning “the place where the land runs on forever.” The region supports one of Earth’s greatest wildlife spectacles: the annual migration of more than a million wildebeest, along with hundreds of thousands of zebras and gazelles. Their movements follow seasonal rains and fresh grazing.

A common mix-up is Kenya’s Maasai Mara National Reserve, which borders the Serengeti to the north and forms part of the same broader ecosystem. The Serengeti Plain itself is principally associated with Tanzania, while the animals’ migration route crosses the international border. The Serengeti also lies near the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, another major wildlife destination.
