In what city is the National Hockey League's headquarters located?

The story behind the answer

The National Hockey League’s headquarters is located in New York City.

The league’s main office is in Manhattan, at One Manhattan West on Ninth Avenue. New York is the NHL’s central administrative base, even though the league maintains important offices in other cities, including Toronto and Montreal.

A common mix-up comes from the NHL’s Canadian roots and its large Canadian fan base. The league was founded in Montreal in 1917, and several of its earliest teams were Canadian. Toronto and Montreal also remain major hockey centers, but neither is the location of the league’s headquarters.

New York City is also closely connected to the NHL’s leadership and media operations. The league office handles competition administration, business affairs, discipline, broadcasting relationships and other league-wide functions. The NHL’s headquarters should not be confused with the Hockey Hall of Fame, which is in Toronto, or Madison Square Garden, the home arena of the New York Rangers.
