Mark Twain delivered his first public lecture in San Francisco.

The lecture was titled “Our Fellow Savages of the Sandwich Islands,” commonly called the Sandwich Islands lecture. Twain had visited Hawaii in 1866 and written a series of popular travel letters for the Sacramento Union. Those letters gave him both material and an audience for a new career as a professional speaker.

He presented the lecture in San Francisco on October 2, 1866, at the Academy of Music. The performance launched a western lecture tour through California and Nevada, including Sacramento, Marysville, Grass Valley, Nevada City, Virginia City, and other mining communities. Virginia City is an easy wrong answer because Twain had lived and worked there as a newspaper writer, and the town featured prominently on the same tour.

The San Francisco appearance was more than a literary milestone: it helped Twain earn money and establish himself as a performer. His public-speaking career eventually expanded across the United States and Britain. By the late nineteenth century, audiences knew him as both a celebrated author and a highly successful lecturer.
