In what century was 'Pride and Prejudice' published?
Answer
19th century
Answer
19th century
Pride and Prejudice was published in the 19th century. Jane Austen’s novel appeared on 28 January 1813, during the Regency period of British history.
The book was published by Thomas Egerton in three hardcover volumes. Austen had originally sold the copyright for £110, a decision that later proved costly because the novel sold well and Egerton earned substantially more from its first editions.
Pride and Prejudice was published anonymously, identified only as being by “the Author of Sense and Sensibility.” Austen’s name became widely known during her lifetime, but her novels were not openly credited to her on their original title pages.
A common mix-up is placing the novel in the 18th century because Austen began writing an earlier version, First Impressions, in the 1790s. The completed and published novel, however, belongs firmly to the 19th century.
