In what American city were the 1996 Summer Olympics held?

The story behind the answer

The 1996 Summer Olympics were held in Atlanta, Georgia, United States. Officially called the Games of the XXVI Olympiad, they ran from July 19 to August 4, 1996.

Atlanta won the host-city vote at the International Olympic Committee session in Tokyo on September 18, 1990. The Games were marketed as the Centennial Olympic Games because they marked 100 years since the first modern Olympics were held in Athens in 1896. Atlanta was the fourth American city to host the Summer Olympics, following St. Louis, Los Angeles, and Los Angeles again.

The event brought 10,318 athletes from 197 national Olympic committees together for 271 events in 26 sports. Beach volleyball, mountain biking, softball, and women's association football were among the sports or disciplines making Olympic debuts or major first appearances.

The Games were also remembered for the bombing at Centennial Olympic Park on July 27. Despite the tragedy, competition continued and Atlanta remains the correct host-city answer.
