In what 1995 movie did Whitney Houston star alongside Angela Bassett? Waiting to Exhale was the film. Whitney Houston played Savannah Jackson, while Angela Bassett portrayed Bernadine “Bernie” Harris in this romantic comedy-drama about four women navigating love, friendship, and independence.

Directed by Forest Whitaker in his feature-film directing debut, Waiting to Exhale was adapted from Terry McMillan’s bestselling 1992 novel. The film also starred Loretta Devine and Lela Rochon, creating an ensemble centered on the women’s relationships with one another rather than only their romances.

The movie was released on December 22, 1995, and became a box-office success. Its soundtrack was also a major cultural moment: Houston performed “Exhale (Shoop Shoop),” while songs by Toni Braxton, Brandy, Mary J. Blige, and other prominent artists helped make the album a hit. A common mix-up is The Bodyguard, Houston’s earlier film debut, which paired her with Kevin Costner rather than Angela Bassett.
