In Veronica Roth's dystopian novel Divergent, which faction does Tris Prior choose at the Choosing Ceremony?

The story behind the answer

In Veronica Roth's dystopian novel Divergent, Tris Prior chooses the Dauntless faction at the Choosing Ceremony.

The ceremony is a major turning point because citizens of the future Chicago society are assigned—or choose—one of five factions organized around a virtue. Tris was born into Abnegation, the faction associated with selflessness, but she feels drawn toward Dauntless, whose members value bravery and train as soldiers and protectors.

Tris's choice separates her from her family and begins her new identity as a Dauntless initiate. She later learns that the faction system is less stable than it appears and that her Divergent status makes her resistant to certain forms of psychological control.

Readers sometimes confuse Tris's faction with her birth faction, Abnegation, or with Erudite, the intellectual faction. The novel was published in 2011 and is the first book in Roth's Divergent trilogy.
