In Veronica Roth's dystopian novel Divergent, the protagonist Tris Prior's brother is named Caleb.
Caleb and Tris grow up in the Abnegation faction, one of five communities into which Chicago's society is divided. At the Choosing Ceremony, Caleb selects Erudite, while Tris chooses Dauntless and begins living under the name Tris rather than Beatrice.
Caleb's choice creates an important family separation and places him within the faction led by Jeanine Matthews. His intelligence and loyalty become central to the political conflict that develops as Erudite seeks power over the city.
Divergent was published in 2011 and begins a trilogy that continues with Insurgent and Allegiant. Caleb is sometimes confused with Tobias Eaton, also known as Four, who becomes Tris's instructor and romantic partner.
