Answer
Long John Silver
Answer
Long John Silver
In “Treasure Island,” the one-legged pirate is Long John Silver.
Robert Louis Stevenson introduced Long John Silver in his 1883 adventure novel as the ship’s cook aboard the Hispaniola. Silver is far more than a simple crew member: he is a former quartermaster under the notorious pirate Captain Flint and the secret leader of the planned mutiny.
Silver’s missing leg is one of his defining features, along with his parrot, Captain Flint. Despite being deceitful, ambitious, and willing to betray others, he is also charismatic and unexpectedly protective toward Jim Hawkins. That moral complexity makes him one of the most memorable figures in pirate fiction.
Billy Bones is another pirate in the novel, but he is the frightened former associate whose warnings about “a seafaring man with one leg” help launch the story. Dr. Livesey is the ship’s doctor and magistrate, while Jim Hawkins is the young narrator and cabin boy. Later film portrayals, especially Robert Newton’s performances, helped shape the modern stereotype of pirate speech.
