Traditional descriptions of a quinceañera court often include 14 attendants of each gender.
The 14 damas and 14 chambelanes symbolically represent the 14 years completed before the honoree reaches age 15. Together with the quinceañera, the court can create a large formal group for the entrance and choreographed waltz.
This number is a tradition rather than a rule. Many families choose smaller courts because of budget, venue size, rehearsal time, or the number of close friends available. Contemporary courts may also be mixed, include relatives, or be omitted entirely.
The number should not be confused with the honoree’s age. The celebration marks 15, while the traditional court count is 14. Likewise, the court members are not the same as padrinos, who are sponsors or supporters. Local customs and family preferences determine how closely a celebration follows the classic arrangement.
