In 'The Wizard of Oz', Dorothy's dog is named Toto.
Toto is Dorothy Gale's small black dog and her faithful companion throughout L. Frank Baum's 1900 novel, 'The Wonderful Wizard of Oz'. He travels with Dorothy from Kansas to Oz after the cyclone carries their farmhouse away. Although Toto cannot speak, he is observant, brave, and often helps expose deception.
Toto is sometimes mistakenly treated as a minor detail from the famous 1939 film, but he is present in Baum's original story. In the book, he is described as a little black dog with curly hair. The character became even more recognizable through the film, where Toto was played by a female Cairn Terrier named Terry.
Readers also commonly confuse Toto with the Scarecrow, Tin Man, and Cowardly Lion, but those are Dorothy's traveling companions, not her pet. Toto's name is consistently given as Toto in the standard story and its best-known adaptations.
